Keyboard cables, compared: coiled, straight, and the connector that actually matters
Every builder eventually stares at a cable dropdown and has to decide whether to care. Here's what coiled versus straight actually changes, and why the keyboard-side connector — not the color of the sleeve — is the decision that follows the board for its whole life.
The cable is the last thing most builders think about and, on a board that stays on one desk for its whole life, close to the least important. But it is also the one part of a custom build a typist touches every single time they sit down, and the one decision — keyboard-side connector — that quietly forecloses or opens every future cable purchase without most buyers noticing at checkout.
This guide skips the marketing language around "premium" cables and gets at the three questions that actually change a buying decision: coiled or straight, which connector is on the keyboard end, and whether any of it is worth paying for over the cable that shipped in the box.
Coiled versus straight is mostly a desk decision, not a sound decision
Coiled cables get sold on vibe — the retro-phone-cord look, the springy coil sitting in a little arc next to the board — and that vibe is real and worth naming honestly: some builders want the coil because it looks finished, the same way they want a keycap set that matches the case. There is nothing wrong with buying a cable for looks. But two claims get attached to coiled cables that deserve separating from the aesthetic one.
The first is desk routing. A coiled cable holds its shape, so it can run from the board to the edge of the desk without needing a cable clip or a strip of tape to keep it from drooping into the way of a mouse hand. A straight cable droops unless it's managed, and on a desk with the keyboard positioned away from the port, that matters. This is a real, measurable difference — it is just a routing property, not an audio or feel property.
The second claim is microphonics — the idea that a coiled cable picks up handling noise (the faint sound of the cable itself flexing) differently from a straight one. This is real but overstated for almost every use case: a cable resting on the desk, plugged in and left alone, contributes nothing to the sound of typing. Microphonics actually show up on a cable under tension — pulled taut across a desk edge, or coiled so tightly it's under spring load — picking up vibration from an elbow bump or a desk knock and transmitting it faintly through the connector. A loose, properly routed cable of either kind is silent in practice.
The honest tiebreaker: coiled cables cost more, almost always because of the sleeve and the coil-forming process, and the coil itself adds a small amount of drag-resistance at the connector every time the board is moved — mostly irrelevant on a stationary desk setup, mildly annoying on a board that gets picked up and moved daily. A stationary board on a desk with the port far from the keyboard is the strongest case for coiled. A board that travels, or sits right next to the port already, gets nothing from the coil beyond looks.
The connector that actually matters is the one on the keyboard, not the computer
Host-side is the easy half of this decision. USB-C has functionally won; the small handful of USB-A ports still shipping on very budget prebuilts are a rounding error at this point, and any cable bought today should be USB-C on the computer end, full stop.
The connector on the keyboard side is the decision that has actual, durable consequences, and it is the one buyers skip past because both options look similar in a product photo.
USB-C receptacle on the board. The keyboard itself has a USB-C port, identical in shape to the one on a phone. Any USB-C-to-USB-C cable from any source — a drawer cable, a phone charging cable, a cable bought from a completely different keyboard vendor — will plug in and, in almost every case, work. This is the standard on the overwhelming majority of boards shipping since roughly 2022, from budget prebuilts through high-end customs, and it is the reason most typists never think about this decision at all: the connector question resolves itself.
JST or GX16 aviator connector on the board. A small but persistent segment of the high-end custom market — especially boards built around the coiled-cable aesthetic, and boards designed with a detachable coiled cable as a feature rather than an afterthought — uses a round, threaded aviator-style connector (commonly sold under the GX16 name, sometimes a smaller JST variant) instead of USB-C on the keyboard side. The connector screws in with a locking collar, which is genuinely more secure against accidental disconnects than friction-fit USB-C, and it's the connector of choice for builders who make or commission custom sleeved cables as a hobby unto itself.
The practical consequence runs both directions. A buyer who wants the freedom to grab any cable off a shelf, build their own sleeved cable from a raw USB-C pigtail kit, or replace a damaged cable same-day from a local electronics store wants a USB-C receptacle on the board. A buyer committed to the aviator-connector aesthetic — usually to match custom coiled cables to a specific case colorway — is opting into a narrower, slower-to-source cable ecosystem, in exchange for a more secure lock and the wider sleeve options custom-cable makers build specifically for it.
Neither is objectively correct. But it's the one spec on a case listing that determines a keyboard's entire future cable-buying experience, and it is worth reading before checkout in a way that "coiled or straight" simply isn't.
Sleeve material is mostly aesthetics, with one real durability note
Once the connector question is settled, sleeve material is the remaining variable, and it is closer to a cosmetic choice than either of the previous two.
Paracord is the older, more traditional sleeve material in the custom-cable hobby — the same 550 paracord sold for camping and survival gear, stripped of its internal strands and slid over the cable core. It has a soft, slightly fuzzy hand-feel, comes in a huge range of stock colors because it's a commodity material, and is what most of the earliest custom-cable makers used before techflex became widely available in small-batch keyboard-cable colorways.
Techflex (expandable braided polyester sleeving) is the material behind most of the tightly woven, glossy-braid cables that dominate keyboard-cable group buys today. It sits flush and tight against the cable core rather than draping loosely the way paracord does, holds a coil shape more crisply, and is generally considered the more "premium"-looking finish in current group-buy renders — part of why it has become the default choice for coiled cables specifically, since a tight braid holds a coil's shape better than a looser paracord wrap.
The one durability note that isn't purely cosmetic: techflex frays less at a cut end and holds up to repeated coiling better over years of use, since paracord's looser weave can work itself slightly loose near the connector over time. Neither material affects the cable's electrical performance — that's set entirely by the wire gauge and connector quality underneath the sleeve.
When the stock cable is genuinely fine
This is the section most cable-comparison content skips, and it's worth being straightforward about it: for a majority of buyers, the cable that ships in the box is functionally fine and the "upgrade" is buying a look, not a function.
A stock cable is genuinely fine when the board lives permanently on one desk, the stock cable already reaches the port without stretching or drooping across a mouse mat, and the build's finished look doesn't depend on the cable matching a colorway. Most prebuilt boards and a large share of custom builds fall into this bucket. The stock cable carries current and data exactly as well as a $60 sleeved one; the wire gauge inside a decent stock cable is not meaningfully worse for a keyboard's low power draw than the wire inside a boutique one.
Upgrading is worth it in three specific cases — the real reasons, not the marketing ones: the board travels and needs the security and quick-disconnect of a locking aviator connector; the desk layout genuinely benefits from a coiled cable's self-supporting shape because the port sits somewhere a straight cable would droop across; or the build's finished aesthetic is part of the point, and a sleeved cable in a matching color functions as a visible accessory the same way a keycap set or a desk mat does. All three are legitimate. "Better sound" and "better signal" are not among them for the overwhelming majority of USB keyboards — a wired keyboard's data requirements are trivial next to what any USB-C cable sold in the last several years can carry.
The connector decision is the one piece of this that a buyer doesn't get to revisit later without swapping the board's PCB or daughterboard. Coiled versus straight and paracord versus techflex are both reversible any time a new cable feels worth the money. Read the keyboard-side connector spec before checkout, and treat everything else in the cable listing as the flexible, low-stakes decision it actually is.
Cable choice is usually the last stop on a modding checklist that starts elsewhere. A builder who has already worked through lubing the switches, tuning the stabilizers, picking a mounting style, and layering in sound dampening has made every decision that actually changes how the board sounds and feels — the cable, by comparison, earns exactly the amount of attention this guide gave it: settle the connector, pick a shape and sleeve that fit the desk, and move on.
